The Quest is Down
It’s January and it is winter
in Winnipeg. There are frozen cars. Massive ruts in the snow
covered roads. Roads that are more slippery than a politician. Broken down
buses. Downed traffic lights. Wind chills of -47. And when it does warm up we
get 10 cm of snow and 70 km winds.
I had to stop riding the Quest.
The shock sticks and has to go back to Riss. Even with the studded tires it has
been hard to drive. I can dress to stay warm at -32 but the roads are too
rutted to ride safely on. I am sending the shock in and I might ride the trike
if the roads improve.
Waiting to start the ride. |
Despite the large tires on the
trike I have run into places where I get stuck in the snow. I have found I can
get moving by using my hands on the front wheels like a wheel chair. I call it
3 wheel drive.
I went on a pre-ride on part of the race course. It warmed up to -18C but there was a good wind. It was fun but I had a rear valve leak and had to stop and pump it up several times.
I had a tip over in one spot where there were uneven rocks. Nothing hurt just my pride. My friend Gregory C. McNeill took these pictures. More of his pictures can be seen here This was a good test and I have learned a few things and will make some changes before I ride again. The skis I made I didn't have to use. The tires float very well if I have to pull it.
I don't think they are worth hauling the extra weight around. More commuting and testing before the big race on February 15th.
Until next time keep warm and have FUN.....

We're still waiting here (at least I am) for some real winter. And you've got it all!
ReplyDeleteI promised myself at least one week with some significant snowfall this year; not sure I'm going to get it ;-)

Paul
Hi Paul, I'm sure there are lots of people who would love to send you their snow if they could. We have too much! And too much cold again too!
DeleteHi Kevin,
ReplyDeleteThat's WINTER your'e talking about! We have had some snow here, and some frost, but not lower then -6ºC. So we have some ice hanging from the rocks, but road conditions are good for cycling. But I haven't been much cycling for me either lately, because of the stormy winds in the last 2 weeks. Between 90 and 120 km/h almost all day long, so no velomobile wheather!
Nice pics! Are Your feet still warm in the North Wave's?
Greetings, Adri.
Oops!!!!! Calculated wrong, the wind speeds were not that high! Between 55 an 75 km/h would be more correct! Sorry!
DeleteHi Adri, The shoes are working great. I have been carrying covers with me, but I haven't needed them. Even on the open trike they seem to be good. They are not good on some floors if you come inside with them. You can slip!

Hey Kevin , I have an old Mango rear shock if you want to use it, if your Risse shock is down too long! I hope you get it running before it thaws. At least most of the roads around Leduc got thawed out during early Jan and are dry now. But the cold came back!
ReplyDeleteHi Larry, Thanks for the shock offer, but I am training on the monster trike for the Actif Epica race. The Quest will be put back together after the 15 has gone past. Keep warm!
